I’LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

1

Tuesday, December 17

Washington, D.C.

“WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH HER?”

Will Stone eyed the beautiful young woman standing in the corridor in front of his apartment and wondered if he’d ever seen her before. No, he would have remembered anyone in the office of the Crop Protection Association who looked like Cameron Diaz and Heather Locklear rolled into one. “What have I done with who? I mean, whom?”

She attempted to peer past him into the apartment. “My cousin.”

“I think you have the wrong apartment.” Ordinarily he would appreciate such unexpected company, but not this morning. This morning he was in a bind, having overslept.

“I’m sure I don’t. The doorman told me this was the right one. He said you would know where my cousin is.”

“Look,” Will said. “I don’t have time for games.” He was already running late. Very late. “I’m really busy. I’ve got a flight to catch this morning and I’m not finished packing.”

“You’re not even dressed.”

“It’s not even eight o’clock,” he pointed out. “I wasn’t expecting company.” He certainly wasn’t expecting a streaky-blond-haired dynamo with big blue eyes and a body that would tempt a monk. His gaze swept over her red sweater, black leather jacket and matching short skirt. All expensive, he’d bet. He ran one hand through his uncombed hair. “You’re lucky I’m wearing anything at all.”

One beautifully shaped eyebrow rose as she looked at his naked chest, then up to his face. “And you’re lucky I haven’t called the police.”

“The police.” He wished he’d had a cup of coffee before opening the door to this insane person. Maybe he’d have more patience—or find more humor in the situation. He definitely would have to quit making jokes, because this woman didn’t think he was funny. “Why on earth would you want to call the police?”

“I told you,” she said, revealing an impatience that made him take a step backward. “I’m looking for my cousin and I want to know what you did with her.”

“Okay. I’ll play along. Who’s your cousin?”

“Melanie,” she said, her voice getting loud. “Melanie Briggs. Ring a bell?”

“Hey, keep it down.” He opened the door wider and let the gorgeous maniac into his living room. “I know where Melanie is. Why didn’t you tell me her name in the first place?”

The woman looked around the room as if she expected Melanie to be hiding behind the nine-foot ivory chenille sofa. “She left me a note and said she was going to spend Christmas at a ranch with Will Stone, a man she met in her apartment building. Are you Will Stone?”

“Yes,” he said, though admitting it was only going to cost him precious time.

“So where is she?”

“She’s in—wait a minute. Melanie said she didn’t want to spend the holidays with her family.” Will went over to his suitcase, spread open on the glass coffee table, and pulled out a clean T-shirt. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to get in the shower.”

The woman, who bore little resemblance to her
